Wedding Dresses For different Body Shapes

An image showing wedding dress adjustments

The search for a dress for your special day can be a daunting task. There are so many different types, shapes, styles and sizes of wedding dresses and it is hard to even know where to start looking.

It can be a needle in a haystack trying to find a gown that is flattering and shows off your best assets. To help begin your search for your dream wedding dress, we are going to discuss which styles are the most flattering for different body types and advise what you should avoid.

Ultimately, it is important to remember that no matter what dress you choose, the most important thing is that you feel beautiful and comfortable.

The Hour Glass

The Hour Glass body shape is typically characterised by a more defined waist, wider hips and a bigger bust. This body shape is naturally curvy and it is key to make sure you get a dress that shows off your curvaceous figure! If you have this body shape, it is advised you to look for dresses that will hug and show off your curves but also keep you balanced by being flatter at your bustier areas. Dresses such as mermaid gowns, fit and flare gowns or v-neckline gowns will all flatter your natural curves. You should avoid dresses that will add weight to your bust and hips, as they are already naturally balanced. Avoid dresses that will make you appear bigger and less flattering to your figure such as ball gown, empire or princess dresses.

The Pear Shape

If you have larger hips, thighs and bottoms with a petite upper body, these are characteristics of a pear shaped body. It is possible that you may be split size, which means that your bust, hips and even waist are different sizes. Dresses that have detail around the neckline will be a great choice for you, as it will draw eyes to your upper body. An a-line gown is a great option for pear shaped brides. This gown will de-emphasize your lower body as it skims over your hips and thighs. Other great choices are ball gowns and empire dresses. You should avoid dresses that will hug your figure, such as mermaid and trumpet dresses. These types of dresses may make you look unbalanced.

The Apple Shape

Apple shaped brides can be quite similar to pears, but apples will carry their weight around their midsection. Pears, on the other hand, carry their weight below their waist. Apple shapes are characterised by a fuller bust and midsection, broad shoulders and back. You should look for gowns that will flatter your shape, so ones that are free flowing or draw attention to your upper body. Empire waisted, a-line and ball gowns are all great examples of dresses that will look beautiful in your apple shape. Try to avoid emphasising your midsection, so avoid belts or sashes over that area. Dresses that hug your figure like mermaid and trumpet should be avoided as they tend to highlight areas you may not want to show off.

The Rectangle Shape

The rectangle body shape is typically defined as having shoulders, waist and hips that are pretty much all in the line. You may have the same hip and bust measurement. You should look for gowns that will create the illusion of having more curves but also emphasise the shape that you do have. Dresses such as a-lime, empire and ball gown will flatter your figure and accentuate your waistline. These dresses have a fuller bottom that will bring more definition to your shape. It is best to avoid dresses that will highlight your lack of curves. Mermaid and fishtail will give you less definition as they will highlight your straight shape.
